Nutrition for Sacramento children

It might be an awkward subject for Folsom parents to bring up with an older child, but making sure your son or daughter is having regular bowel movements is essential for their health – at all ages. If your child is experiencing problems with this, try these natural fixes before you resort to a medication.

Increased water intake is often all it takes for Sacramento area kids to overcome this problem since dehydration is a common cause.

To encourage your child to drink more water, try getting them their own water bottle and keeping it full in the fridge. That way, even if your child is too small to reach the tap themselves, they always have easy access to cold water.

It’s important to evaluate the diet of your child and look for opportunities to introduce more fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. These foods contain the fiber that is necessary for bowel health. Plus, you’ll see lots of additional health benefits from these steps toward proper nutrition.

If natural remedies don’t alleviate the problem, consult with your El Dorado Hills, Roseville, or Elk Grove pediatrician.

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Folsom families to raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition for children and childhood obesity in Elk Grove concern me. I also own a fantastic Sacramento area home business that sells Xobiotic and XProtein Meal Replacement Shake.

Please contact me today at 801-318-0001 if you would like to know more about Xobiotic. I hope to talk to you soon!

3 Tips For Improving Folsom Kids’ Attention Spans

Tuesday, January 21st, 2014

El Dorado Hills immunization schedule

Hello California parents! Today in the Folsom Children’s Health Blog, we are going to look at various ways to lengthen kids’ attention spans. An increased attention span can improve learning ability as well as behavior and is an important aspect of kids health in El Dorado Hills.

1. Find an activity that will hold their attention. This might mean that you need to experiment with different types of toys and crafts. One child might enjoy building blocks while another may become engrossed in an art project. There are many craft and hobby stores in the Elk Grove, Roseville, and El Dorado Hills area where parents can get great ideas.

2. Recorded stories are a wonderful resource for increasing attention spans. Have your child lie on the floor and close their eyes, then play a recorded story. When it’s finished, have your child retell the story to you. Local Sacramento libraries are perfect for finding recorded books and stories. Or you can download audio books for your iPad or other electronic reader.

3. Make sure that your child is using age-appropriate toys, crafts, and media. Age recommendations can be very helpful when deciding what activities will effectively engage your child.

Remember that it’s natural for different children to have varying attention spans, but the attention span of all kids should improve with age.

I’m Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about helping California parents raise healthy and happy kids. I try to keep apprised on the latest in proper nutrition, childhood obesity, and immunizations. I am the owner of my own Folsom home business that promotes Xobiotic. If you are interested in learning more, please visit my website at www.WeighToWellness.net or give me a call at 801-318-0001.

4 Things Your Folsom Pediatrician Wants You To Know

Wednesday, January 15th, 2014

El Dorado Hills Kids Vitamins

The health of their children is a top priority for parents in the El Dorado Hills, Roseville, and Elk Grove areas, and that’s why having a good relationship with your child’s pediatrician is important. From well-child check-ups to children’s immunizations to flu shots, these healthcare providers are there when parents need them.

Today in the Folsom Children’s Health Blog, we want to give you a look into some of the issues facing pediatricians, especially those issues that they may have difficulty discussing with parents.

1. A cold is a cold is a cold, even if they call it something different. There are lots of names for the common cold, like “viral rhinosinusitis” or “purulent rhinitis”. They might sound fancy, but if your kids has it, it really just means they have a cold. Many pediatricians use these terms so parents don’t feel like their being sent away from the office with an overly-simple diagnosis.

2. Old wives’ tales and internet health sites are no substitutes for professional medical advice! There are many rumors that have no scientific basis, but some patients insist on bringing their child in because an older member of the family noticed something (think green snot or ear tugging). Also, while the internet is filled with great information, it is also teeming with sensationalized and nonscientific sites that can be downright dangerous. Pediatricians just want parents to be safe and well-informed when choosing how to treat their child.

3. Fevers are scary, but for children over 3 months old, there is no magic number where a fever becomes dangerous. However, accompanying symptoms like lethargy, rash, or inconsolable crying are cause for concern.

4. Scheduling is not an exact science.
No one likes to camp out in the waiting room, but, once in a while, a patient requires a little extra care, and this can throw the schedule off for the day. However, one day that patient may be your child, and you’ll want that schedule-ruining extra care as well.

Exotic Pet Dangers In Elk Grove

Does your child have an unusual pet? Many Elk Grove parents have bypassed cats and dogs for pets that don’t leave hair, urine, or vomit on the carpet. Ease of care, however, is not always a wise trade-off. Elk Grove parents should be aware of the multiple health and safety risks associated with reptiles, rodents, ferrets, primates, and even fish.

The following list of pets and the possible dangers reads like a script for a horror movie:

Fish: infections that can cause lung disease, skin infections, and leprosy
Hamsters: a virus that causes irreversible nerve damage
Hedgehogs: salmonella, yersinia pseudotuberculosis, rabies, and fungal infections
Iguanas, lizards, snakes: salmonella (the animals themselves can tolerate levels of salmonella far greater than humans)
Monkeys and other primates: herpes B (can cause meningitis in humans), tuberculosis, serious injury
Ferrets: these fierce critters with razor-sharp teeth have maimed many children
Prairie dogs: tuleremia (often fatal infection)
African Gambian rats: monkeypox (smallpox-related disease)

The foregoing information was taken from an excellent U.S. News article which can be found at http://health.usnews.com/health-news/blogs/on-parenting/2008/10/06/8-pets-that-pose-major-health-threats-to-kids

With proper hygiene and safety precautions these pets may not cause problems, but it is important to understand the possible dangers. Consult an expert for comprehensive instructions on caring for any traditional or non-traditional pet.

Rethinking Sacramento Schools

Friday, January 3rd, 2014

Rethinking Sacramento Schools Welcome to today’s Healthy Sacramento Children blog. This site is dedicated to promoting children’s health in the Sacramento area.

Unless you have been living in a cave for the last 20 years, you have heard about the obesity epidemic among U.S. children.

There are many worthwhile programs in the Sacramento community that promote healthy eating habits and increased exercise for our youngest residents. I came across an interesting article last week that focused on how the design of schools can affect children’s health in general and obesity rates in particular.

‘Many schools were planned without thought given to how students can safely walk or ride their bikes to school. Playgrounds have been cut from budgets. An overemphasis on competitive sports has created a disproportionate amount of funding going to a select group of high profile sports, while minimizing the opportunities for the majority of students who desperately need exercise.’ Joel K. Sims, AIA, “Designing Schools To Fight Childhood Obesity,” School Designer, May 2007, http://www.schooldesigner.com/Articles/Designing-Schools-to-Fight-Childhood-Obesity-Part-1.asp, accessed on May 16, 2011

Here are some suggestions for making schools fitness-friendly:

  • Incorporate features of professional health clubs
  • Partner with community fitness centers to create multi-use facilities
  • Combine electronic entertainment and exercise
  • Incorporate movement into lesson plans

As we plan for new and renovated Sacramento schools, let’s take our children’s fitness into consideration. As Sacramento parents and educators, we can also promote lesson plans that incorporate movement. I also believe we need to look at how our tax dollars are spent. Do competitive sports programs in California receive more than their fair share of available funds? Could we better use this money to provide exercise opportunities for all Sacramento children?

I encourage you to raise awareness of these issues in your California city. The only thing that will spur change is if parents, educators, and government leaders work together to lower the obesity rates in our California communities.

Flu Shot Guidelines For El Dorado Hills Kids

Flu Shot Guidelines For El Dorado Hills Kids

Every year as winter approaches, many El Dorado Hills parents wonder if they should get their kids a flu shot.

Everyone gets the flu, right? Is it that big of a deal?

In most cases, the flu is an inconvenience, but not detrimental beyond missing a few days of school. However, El Dorado Hills pediatricians caution that it is extremely important for high risk kids to get a flu shot. Ditto if your child is in regular contact with a high risk person.

What qualifies a child as high risk? El Dorado Hills experts say that chronic medical conditions such as diabetes or asthma puts a child at greater risk because the flu can contribute to serious complications. Many El Dorado Hills doctors also recommend flu shots for all children under five years old. El Dorado Hills experts advise getting your child’s flu vaccination as early as possible, in August or September or as soon as it is available, to protect them through the entire season which generally lasts from October to April.

Remember that two shots are required for children under the age of eight, given four weeks apart, for full protection your first year of getting vaccinated. Just one shot per year is needed after that.

Flumist is a nasal spray vaccine that can be given to healthy children ages two and up, an option that can be more child friendly. Side effects from either method of vaccination may include runny nose, muscle aches, vomiting, or low grade fever. The new flu vaccines offer protection from both H1N1 and the seasonal flu.

Old-School Snacks For Sacramento Kids

Tuesday, December 24th, 2013

Less Meat, More Plants For Healthier El Dorado Hills Kids

What does it take to make a healthy snack? The aisles at every El Dorado Hills, Roseville, and Elk Grove grocery store are lined with packages that claim to be healthy and to contain the newest, most exciting vitamin or mineral. But is that really what makes a snack healthy?

Chances are that the answer is no. A lot of the foods that make healthy snacks are not the ones that you find packaged in the middle of the supermarket. Rather, they are what we would consider plain old food.

Plain old food has the advantage of being unprocessed and free of chemicals and preservatives. So, let’s take a look at these seemingly boring snack ingredients.

Cheese is a real protein powerhouse for your kids, so a little goes a long way. For a fun twist, try using cookie cutters to make shapes that your kids will love to gobble up!

Peanut butter and childhood go together like, well, peanut butter and jelly. Ants on a log, peanut butter spread on celery with raisins is always a fun treat. If your child has peanut allergies, you can always substitute almond butter in most recipes.

Low-fat yogurt is probably a favorite of your child’s already, but this versatile source of calcium has plenty of tricks up its sleeves. Try adding berries, or something crunchy like granola or whole-grain cereal. And, in the hot summer months, a yogurt pop can really hit the spot.

The humble egg isn’t just for breakfast anymore. Hard-boiled eggs kept in the fridge might be one of the most convenient ways to enjoy this high-protein snack.

As you can see, the secret to children’s nutrition might just be that there is no secret at all. Find real food, make it into a snack, and ignore the claims made by processed, pre-packaged food.

Hi. My name is Geneve Campbell and I am passionate about kids health in El Dorado Hills. I want to help parents in and around Sacramento to raise healthy, happy children. One way I do this by discussing important issues in my Children’s Health Blog, such as childhood obesity in Elk Grove, immunization schedules, and safety.

4 Critical Playground Rules For Sacramento Kids

Thursday, December 19th, 2013

Nutrition for Sacramento children

The local playground is a good place for El Dorado Hills, Roseville, and Elk Grove children to enjoy exercise and social interaction. However, there is potential for injury. Today in the Folsom Kid’s Health Blog, we want to give you some helpful playground safety advice.

First, in the hot California summer months parents should be sure to check any metal equipment such as slides before a child climbs on. The sun can quickly heat metal to the point that it can burn skin. Also, never allow children to play on the playground without wearing shoes.

Next, parents should pay special attention to the moving parts at their Sacramento play area. These areas should be out of reach for children, but parents should always double-check to make sure that kids can’t reach these danger zones.

Third, don’t allow children to attach other items, such as jump ropes or leashes, onto the playground equipment.

Lastly, many families choose to ride bikes to the park. This can be the perfect way to get exercise and avoid childhood obesity in Elk Grove. Just make sure children remove their helmets as well as anything else that is around their necks (like hoodies with drawstrings).

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Sacramento families raise healthy, happy kids. Issues such as proper nutrition and kid’s immunization schedules are often on my mind. I am the proud owner of my own Sacramento area home business that sells Xobiotic.

How Does Nature Make El Dorado Hills Kids Happier?

Thursday, December 5th, 2013

El Dorado Hills kids shot schedule

Hello Folsom parents! Welcome the the Sacramento Kid’s Health Blog. I’m sure most of you know how important it is for your kids health to spend time outdoors each and every day. But it may be even more important than you think.

Just like proper nutrition, immunizations, and vitamins, getting outside is essential for your child’s health.

One reason if for the natural light of the outdoors. This natural light keeps kids alert and healthy. Also, exposure to this light in the morning has a way of setting children’s internal clocks to promote better sleep and earlier bedtimes. (And what Elk Grove parent doesn’t want earlier bedtimes?!) Another reason is that nature soothes and comforts children in safe, healthy ways. Studies have shown that children have better ability to focus with increased time outdoors. This will translate to more productive learning time as well as more tranquility in the home. Lastly, outdoor exercise is superior to indoor exercise because it promotes more physically vigorous play like jumping, running, and tumbling. These are all of the things that Roseville area parents are always telling their kids to stop doing in the living room!

Arrange your family’s schedule so that your children have time to explore the Folsom outdoors, and everyone will be better for it!

My name is Geneve Campbell and I want to help Folsom families to raise healthy, happy kids. I am the owner of a Sacramento area home business that sells Xobiotic. If you are interested in learning more, visit my web site at www.WeighToWellness.net or give me a call at 801-318-0001.

3 Easy Ways For Folsom Kids to Get More Antioxidants

Friday, November 29th, 2013

El Dorado Hills kids shot schedule

Because antioxidants are associated with cell damage and cell death, parents in the El Dorado Hills, Roseville, and Elk Grove area often mistakenly assume that antioxidants are only important for adults and the elderly, those with more visible cell death and damage. But that simply isn’t the case. Everyone needs antioxidants for their health, even kids.

Antioxidants work their magic by protecting cells from free radicals. Free radicals are a by-product of the normal metabolic processes that take place in everyone’s bodies (even kids!) all the time. Free radicals may also occur from pollutants, such as cigarette smoke, or when the body breaks down certain medicines.

Free radicals damage cells through oxidation. You might remember from chemistry class that this is the same process that causes an apple slice to turn brown. During oxidation in the cells, DNA can be damaged and changed, which can create the beginnings of disease. A chain reaction of damage can also occur with one damaged molecule becomes a free radical itself and then damages another, and so on.

Now that you know their importance, here are 3 great ways to get more antioxidants into your kids’ diets.

1. Get more veggies on their plates at dinner time and in their lunch boxes

2. Make fruit the snack of choice for your family

3. When buying processed snacks, choose those fortified with antioxidants.
